the relatively small force that quickly overwhelmed the Iraqi military is too small to restore order in a nation the size of California
It's more than just the size of the country, it's the continuing hostility of the Iraqis. Military commanders are being totally caught off guard by incidents like today's brazen shooting of a G.I. as he waited in line to buy a soft drink. The troops themselves are disconcerted by this - they weren't briefed to expect any of this. It gets down to Bush's racist assumption that little brown people can't possibly hold their own against the mighty United States.
The Iraqis know that deposing Saddam was only a pretext to steal their land and its assets from them. The only important players Bush fooled were the American people and our soldiers. Everybody is gradually absorbing the truth, though. Soon there will be nobody insisting on the purity of our motives except Condoleezza Rice and Donald Rumsfeld, and they won't believe it themselves.
