Boy, talk about a Freudian slip. Humility is being self-effacing. Maybe you just thought they had accepted that they were inferiors, and thus acceded to our whims. I don't think so, though, I just think you're a little English-challenged.

We've talked about this on other threads, but the bottom line (ha ha ha) is this: those people--and yes, they ARE people--thought their lives were in peril. They may well have thought--as most sane people would--that the fact that this was going on made it an almost certainty that they'd be killed, since nobody'd ever want witnesses to this kind of thing. They might also have thought and may still think that their fellow detainees would kill them to avoid the degradation of survivors knowing about this. This was horrible, and they were probably in abject terror, literally fearing for their lives.

People who minimize this have a hidden agendum, and they betray both that and a sociopathic dismissal of others.
