When was the last time you heard someone admit to being ashamed of being English, Italian, Japanese or Rwandan? Is it because America is the only country worth being ashamed of? Somehow I doubt it.

You are not your country.

It is as absurd to be ashamed of being American as it is to be proud of it. An accident of birth has nothing to do with your identity. I am a global citizen before I am an American and the actions of uneducated trogledytes who happen to have been born within the same arbitrary national borders as me have no impact on my life or self-esteem whatsoever.
