Get involved in the local races. That is where you can see the candidates face to face and where individuals have the most clout. If you have a whacko school board member, go to meetings, record his statements, and distribute them to neighbors. Run for the board yourself, or support someone who is willing, and vote the rascal out. It usually doesn't take that many people to do it-it's more a matter of organization. Remember Tip O'Neal said "All politics is local."
