In this case, the violence is absolutely integral to the story. The book of Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would not even look like a man, but a piece of meat at his time of death. By showing the unrepentant, unrelenting horror and gore of the scourgin and crucifizion, Gibson is trying to make people exactly what Jesus went through for everybody. I agree, violence for the sake of violence is not good, but in this case it's integral.
