I can just imagine the conversation if the Tea Party was around when Ike proposed the Interstate Highway bill.
They'd first point out that superhighways aren't in the constitution, then go on about how these roads would kill small business by routing traffic around small towns without an exit at 70mph. Then they'd complain that they aren't planning any cross country travel and people will never use these socialist white elephant trails.
Actually, as I understand it these complaints really were made back in the day, but the crackpot voice wasn't amplified as it is now and the government began mixing the concrete that fueled American paychecks for decades.
You have to spend money to make money, as they say.
