is a form of magical thinking: "Maybe if I despise the poor and make enough snide remarks about them, that will keep ME from falling into poverty."
The oddest thing is when affluent right-wing writers rant on and on about how "freeloaders" get food stamps, Section 8 housing, and Medicaid. They actually sound envious of the poor. I sometimes challenge them to go live on welfare (which, they will discover, is really hard to get) and see how wonderful it is.
