Actually, GWB brought us back to our bad, old deficit spending habits in 2001 (on budget) and 2002 (total budget). The economy going in the toilet would make our current bad situation much worse as the size of the deficit would balloon in response to reduced revenues from both individual taxpayers and corporations. At the same time, claims on some entitlement programs would increase. The cost of borrowing would increase and an increasing share of our revenues would be spent on interest. This would make a dumb war even dumberer.

Such a scenario should provoke a much more extensive conversation (your "natural discussion") on the $ cost of the war. You and I would talk about it. I just don't think that the media and the mass of the electorate will latch on to the connection that our oversized military budget, our war expenditures, and the borrowing that they entail are fuel for a fiscal fire.

I think there's a pretty good chance we will find out. Hope I'm wrong.
