It's hard to see how they would benefit without risk so close to the election but i'm paranoid enough to wonder if there couldn't be a Rovish neutralizing and immunizing planted scandal in things like this before the election.

The scandal gets debunked and the messengers are discredited and the GOP and Bush get immunized against both the accuser and the accusation in case voth arise later as some people are led to assume later events are 'another false allegation' and the reporter 'can't be trusted'.
