Likely-Gore votes voided in Duval

By Mary Maraghy
Times-Union staff writer

Mike Langton, chairman of the Northeast Florida Gore campaign, said Sunday he was upset to find that many of the 27,000 voided presidential ballots in Duval County were in predominantly black areas.

A Times-Union review found that of the 27,000 ballots whose presidential votes were voided in Duval County, nearly 42 percent came from City Council Districts 7, 8, 9 and 10, though those districts accounted for just 20 percent of all ballots cast for president countywide. More than 11,300 of the 59,650 ballots in those four districts -- about 19 percent -- did not count in the presidential race.

Those four council districts, all north of downtown, are overwhelmingly Democratic, and voters there favored Gore. Of the votes that were counted, about 80 percent went to Gore.

In contrast, in District 4 on the city's Southside, 64 percent of voters preferred Bush. About 24,200 votes were cast for president there, with just more than 1,800 -- or about 7.5 percent -- tossed out.

"It's very disturbing that those numbers are that high," Langton said. "Something's awry here. It's disproportionately out of whack."

Looks like we need to keep a close watch on Districts 7, 8, 9, and 10 this time around!
