'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' she replied.

'What pledge shall I give you?' he asked.

He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him. Then she got up and left him. Taking off her veil, she resumed wearing her widow's clothes. Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did not find her. He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?'

'There has been no prostitute here,' they answered.

About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore, she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.'

'Bring her out,' ordered Judah, 'and let her be burnt alive!'

But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law. 'It was the owner of these who made me pregnant,' she said. 'Please verify whose seal and cord and staff these are.'

Judah recognized them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.
