Zbigniew Brzezinski, whom The Washington Post calls “one of the nation’s most important voices on foreign policy,” in a presentation of his latest book, “The Choice: Global Domination or Global Leadership” on Thursday, April 22 2004, put it this way:

"... In the last two years, in the last year and a half, actually, the United States has become engaged on a colossal scale in a huge undertaking, of which most Americans are not consciously aware and haven't thought through the implications, namely, a massive engagement in a huge swathe of Eurasia, ranging from the Suez Canal to the western frontiers of Xinjiang in China, from the southern frontier of Russia to the Pakistani littoral on the Arabian Sea. 550 million people, religiously, ethnically, politically and territorially conflicted, with a great deal of percolating and also in some places escalating violence, with religious fundamentalism in some places on the rise, populations that are also poor, aroused, quite young, restless. We're engaged from Egypt to Pakistan and the border with China, from Uzbekistan down to the shores of the Indian Ocean, and we're engaged militarily and politically, and it's a huge engagement, which is going to last many years, which is going to cost a lot of lives, which is costing a lot of money and we're just beginning to see the scale of that undertaking. And it is my concern that we'll not be able to manage this alone. That to manage this effectively, because we are engaged, we need friends, we need particularly friends with whom we share the same values, the same convictions and interests. And that means our traditional allies, particularly Europeans and we need some international packaging, a framework, and that means the United Nations. ..."
