For US$30 million, plus diamond mining and other mineral concessions, Mann registered a “security company” in London called Executive Outcomes. It was a front for a bigger outfit of the same name that was simultaneously established in South Africa, but which recruited former South African Defence Force fighters for mercenary operations in Africa.

He established another company, Logo Logistics, which had the obvious profile of a mercenary outfit and which owned a Boeing jet. By several accounts, Mann was offered more than US$1.5m by Equatorial Guinea opposition leader Severo Moto to overthrow President Nguema. It looks as though it might prove to be an adventure too far for Simon Mann, with possible execution in Equatorial Guinea the conclusion of an unconventional career.
