Col. Bill Burkett took a lot of heat for saying that the Texas guard records had been cleansed in 1997 or so, when Bush was running for a second term as governor:

My understanding was that there were two sets of paper copies, one held by the Texas Guard and one by the Denver office of the National Guard (the entire national guard's records repository). Whether the Pentagon or Denver had the microfiche record, I'm not sure.
If the AP is seeking the records in Texas, those may already have been diddled with--unless there's another set in Texas somewhere.
