I imagine many people will rationalize their little outdoor hobbies at the expense of those who don't share the same amount of enthusiasm.
"sheep", "tame", "obey", "never really lived", "not capable of understanding that" are all very clever, yet subjective self-validations. I imagine it allows one to feel quite a bit more vainglorious to infer the extent of value-of-living in others based merely on our own personal choices in benign entertainment and hobbies-- that they cease to be "sheep" only when they make choices we approve of.
It's an bemusing dogma in that it advertises the character of the speaker rather than on his targets as he may have originally intended, but one I have little faith in myself.
