That was the start of universal warrantless interception and diversion of domestic phone, fax, and e-mail communications inside the U.S. Since Israel firms had the leading edge on such telecom monitoring technology at the time, which was mandated by CALEA for installation at US switching nodes and ISPs, US companies purchased from Israeli firms the equipment and software to spy on domestic US telecommunications. The primary providers were Israeli-owned firms,NARUS, VERINT and NICE, which beginning in the 1990s gained an inside view of US affairs that in some ways exceeded that of the NSA. See,
