I was replying to the comment that marriage is not a religious experience. Pointing out that is actually is a religious experience in some contexts, and in the justice of the peace context that you mention it is also a civic experience.

To be clear, my observation is that marriage is more than one thing, and that is the crux of the cultural divide.
