At the time I emigrated to Canada, the Canadian Border Patrol (on the New York border) was knee-deep in a scandal involving Canadian guards demanding sex from some women in exchange for border papers.

My own experience at that immigration station is this: Upon learning that I could type, the guards rudely told me that I should "type my own damn immigration paperwork then". They pointed me to a typewriter and told me to get to typing. I think it was because I was young, alone and vulnerable.

Funny. When I lived on the Mexican side of the Border and had to return to the USA now and then, I never once had a problem with immigration. But I know plenty of others who did.
