Under your logic, in my classroom, if I have given the instruction to raise your hand before speaking, and you don't, I'm free to tase you. You didn't do the right thing, you see.
Don't buy it, and I don't believe that this was appropriate, either. Escalation and punishment are not the same as de-escalation and compliance.
