majoring in Mechanical Engineering. We took many of the same classes as pre-meds; calculus, physics and chemistry. We tended to look down on the pre-meds because while we fumbled along trying to learn our stuff*, they cheated their way through to achieve that 3.9 or 4.0 needed for medical school. Some of these kids I knew from high school and they cheated their way to the top of the class then. I wasn't any slouch, but my honest 93 or 95 didn't match their 98 or 99. Of course, when the SATs came along and I blew everyone else out of the water by a good 200 points, no one could figure out why! Why would anyone expect people who cheated their way through high school and colege to stop there?
* The worst part - the Physics , Chemistry and Math departments weren't much interested then in teaching engineers. They tended top assign the lowest, least experienced grad students to the 100 and 100 level courses, and lots of time their English wasn't very good. We also got the tenured professors who were lousy teachers. The poor teaching was masked by the kids who swapped homework answers and test answers to come up with the As.
