Exceptions being the animal was being provoked (not the case here) or the animal was protecting the owner from danger (not the case here).

I'd never own a chimp, so I'm talking in terms of dogs. If my dog attacked somebody for no reason, that'd be my fault. If somebody was trying to hurt my dog, me, or breaking into my house, and he went for their throat, then as far as I'm concerned, "good doggie, have a biscuit" is the proper response. My one Border Collie is fear aggressive with small children, hence he does not get near small children at any time. It's part of being a responsible owner.
