DENVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- A New Jersey hospital system is eliminating 180 jobs, citing the strain of the national economic downturn.

Denville-based Saint Clare's Health Systems said Wednesday that 100 workers are being laid off immediately and another 80 full-time positions would be eliminated in a move to reduce costs and improve productivity.

Leslie Hirsch, St. Clare's president and chief executive officer, said the jobs were eliminated across the four-hospital system.

Saint Clare's operates hospitals in Denville, Boonton Township, Dover and Sussex Borough. It has about 3,500 employees.
