US population, 18 and over: somewhere around 228 million (US Census data, 2007).

I think your two iPods for every American adult is just a bit exaggerated, it's more like two thirds of an iPod for each adult, and it doesn't take into account that Apple sells the iPod throughout the world, not just in the US.
