Dictators always ignore the will of the people; that's why they're dictators. Bush knows that he has a free run for another 14 months because the Democrats don't want to alarm people unnecessarily. So a man without a popular mandate to run the country will run it into the ground for another year because nobody else in the government sees fit to stop him. Musharraf knows that the United States can't back up any of its bluster. We don't have any troops to spare from the dual quagmires. So what is Bush's alternative? Appeal to the United Nations?

Well, yeah, I suppose it would be funny, except for one minor thing: All the people who are going to die needlessly while Musharraf clings to power and staves off his own day of reckoning.
