12. Hardly surprising.
The catholic church, and its many offshoots, is, was and has been a political entity and force for its entire history, going back nearly two millennia. It was often the most powerful political power and even the only political power in many areas.
They have exercised life and death authority over millions, established and collected taxes and raised armies. A "tithe" is little more than a regressive or even a "sales" tax, levied on its parishioners.

I have long since passed the stage of aggrieved retribution and total condemnation of religion in general, but I do hold that sparing large institutions the task of and responsibility for contributing to the general welfare of the nation is a tax imposed on the rest of us.
