Is He Gay Or Not?

U.S. Rep. Mark Foley calls press to say he won’t talk about his sexual orientation

By MICK MEENAN

Three weeks after a news article first reported that he is gay, Congressmember Mark Foley (R-FL) continued to refuse to answer the question of whether he is homosexual and vowed to press on with his campaign to become a United States Senator from Florida.

The Senate seat in question is held by three-term Sen. Bob Graham who is currently on the hustings seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

Late last week, Foley denounced a May 8 article by Bob Norman in New Times, a Palm Beach weekly, in a conference call with reporters from around the state. He said that he was speaking out because he feared a major Florida daily was about to publish the story. Foley blamed Democratic activists for attempting to undermine his run for the Senate.

The next day, May 23, the Miami Herald reported that Foley argued “that it’s nobody’s business but his own” whether or not he’s gay. He was quoted as calling the printed innuendo about his sexual orientation to be “revolting and unforgivable.”

Norman, in his New Times piece, argued he was only reporting what was widely known.
