I sat next to a South Carolina Civil Servant.
He seemed to be fairly high placed and was telling me about having to contract with a Chicago law firm to handle a suit against the State.
A drunk went off of the road and was suing S.C. for having unsafe and shitty roads. The drunk missed a turn and his car tumbled ten or fifteen feet into a ditch: there were no guard rails in what was a dangerous area.
The Civil Servant was pissed about a drunk bringing suit and when I asked why they weren’t guardrails and he said, “Do you know what that would cost”?
I said something like, “Half the cost of the lawsuit, maybe, or a small fraction of your budget?”
At least he stopped talking to me after that. This was during the summer of 2001.
