Bush-Cheney training activists for the 2004 Florida campaign
BRENDAN FARRINGTON
Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. - President Bush's re-election campaign told Republican activists Saturday to assume the 2004 election will be as close as it was four years when a 537-vote margin in Florida ultimately decided the presidency.

The message came during one in a series of training sessions the campaign organized to build a grass-roots network, a traditional Democratic strength, that will help increase Republican turnout and spread the president's message.

"This is not a pep rally," campaign spokesman Reed Dickens told more than 200 people gathered for the two-hour meeting. "You're here to get homework for the next 12 months."

The group, which included Tampa Bay area party leaders and volunteers, was told that grass-roots efforts will be the key to winning the election and winning it with enough votes to avoid another recount. (snip/...)
