When Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun arrived in Washington in 1992, it was assumed by some that she had a husband who was the senator, so administrators attempted to issue her a spouse's ID card instead of senator's credentials. Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, who is known for her braided hair, vibrant apparel and outspokenness, has been slighted more than once. When she initially arrived at the Capitol, she was repeatedly stopped in the parking lot because security guards thought she looked suspicious. At other times, Capitol elevator operators refused to take her anywhere, telling her that the elevator was for Congress members only. When North Carolina Rep. Eva Clayton requested to speak out of turn during a House committee meeting so that she could leave and make another pressing meeting, a male colleague questioned her motives.
