OTTAWA, Jan. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States is looking forward to having a "very close relationship" with Canada following Stephen Harper's election win, U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins said Tuesday.
The U.S. was anticipating "making a strong relationship even stronger." ""Our relationship is the envy of the world," Wilkins said on Canadian Television's program Canada AM.
Wilkins' comments came after his remark on the Northwest Passage in the Arctic region was rebuffed by Stephen Harper.
A week ago Wilkins told reporters that Americans did not recognize Canada's claim to the Northwest Passage. But Canada's prime minister-designate replied Thursday by saying he would not take orders on sovereignty from the U.S. ambassador, and that he will stick with his plan to station armed icebreakers, remote-controlled aerial drones and troops in the Arctic.
