Rupert Murdoch's Sunday Times newspaper in London has been forced to retract claims it made about Kojo Annan, the son of the UN secretary general.

The paper which made a number of allegations about Annan in relation to the United Nations oil-for-food program now admits the claims were untrue. The Sunday Times will pay Annan an undisclosed sum in damages. The newspaper has also publicly apologised to Annan.

Many Murdoch news organisations, including the influential Fox News Channel, joined with the White House in attacks on Kofi Annan over his alleged links with the oil-for-food program, based almost entirely on claims involving his son
