RALEIGH — According to former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, Republican troubles in Washington and elsewhere leave North Carolina Democrats poised for victory in state and federal races next year.
Cleland is the keynote speaker Saturday at the annual Vance-Aycock Dinner in Asheville. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Grove Park Inn. It is the state’s largest gathering of Democrats.
Democrats consider Cleland to be a war hero while Republicans consider him a nuisance. He lost both legs and his right arm during the Vietnam War when a grenade exploded near him.
Republicans accused Cleland of exaggerating the extent of his injuries for political gain.
