I recall watching a national geographic piece a year or so ago with Sebastian Junger on the situation in Afghanistan. A village was in an uproar, because an elderly man's fruit tree had been cut down by his enemies.

After interviewing several Afghans, he reported that because of the desert-like climate, it takes DECADES for a fruit tree to reach maturity and produce fruit, and a family fortunate enough to have such a tree values it highly. To destroy such a tree is considered a shocking act of insult and aggression.

I'm sickened by our actions over there.
