Reply #58: Curiouser and Curiouser

I thought that the Gosch and Wetterling cases may have been linked and it hit me then that both incidents took place just before national elections. With this surprising development perhaps my prayer at the end of the message I wrote this week for a DU lounge thread will be answered.

Got called into my 11 year old son's elementary school. Car is dead. Hop on the bus and sit on one of the front seats as ridership is low outside of rush hour. I am vegging, watching out the window. Something catches my eye and as I am watching it go by my eyes lock on a guy glaring at a 10 year old boy sitting by himself on the bus. Guy sees me looking at him and does not change his glare. I felt a chill go down my spine and bile come up from my stomach. Nobody has affected me that way before or since. I couldn't tell you about anyone else I ever saw on any bus in my 50 some years but that man is burned into my memory down to the ironed crease in his khaki pants. He gets off at the stop across from a racket ball club.

One week later I read in the paper that in the the alley behind the racket ball club an 11 year old boy was grabbed and almost forced into a silver car but a college student saw what was going on and grabbed the kid back out but they did not get the license plate number.

Two weeks later I hop of a bus and get off near the Sears store and start to walk across the street. A fellow in a silver car shouts out the passenger door to me just as I come past the front of his car. When I get to the other side I look at him to see if it is someone I know and it is the same guy from the bus. He has the creepiest grin on his face.

Three weeks later 11 year old Jacob Wetterling disappears from a small town just outside the Twin Cites. Forced off his bike at gunpoint and never seen again.

I told all of that to the St Paul Police when Jacob was not returned in 48 hours. After one week I went back and canvased the area and the racket ball club seemed to know the man as a member but didn't want to get involved. One year later I told the FBI all of that and at year two I told the Jacob Wetterling Foundation.

The day Jacob was taken I suddenly felt that he had been taken to an abandoned seminary. I knew of one that was half way between St Joseph and Minneapolis. I was talking to my sister-in-law on the phone later that evening and told her the weird recurring thought and her mother was listening to the conversation and she had the same weird thought but she knew of another abandoned seminary near the tip of Lake Brainard. Neither of us ever thought of ourselves as psychic in anyway.

About 6 years later money turned up in the Twin Cities with a message saying that the writer was Jacob Wetterling. Handwriting experts said it could be his writing. About that time I saw a kid hitching (the other direction) on University Avenue wearing a Tux with a pink tie loosened and top button open in front of some upscale gay restaurants. My immediate thought was that he looked a lot like the age enhanced depiction of Jacob Wetterling, so much that I pulled a uturn to go back and ask him his name two blocks later but when I got back to the are the kid was gone.

Every milestone that my 11 year old reached reminded me of Patty Wetterling and those times she would never have with her child. Perhaps if I had only one question I could ask of God it would be where are all the missing children?
