10. Another sad fact for victims...
Most children who are sexually abused--are abused by someone living in the home or very close to the family (father, stepfather, uncle, grandfather).

Many times, the entire family is dysfunctional--and the mother (more often a victim of sexual abuse herself) is unable to acknowledge or recognize the signs of sexual abuse in her own children. She's in denial about her own pain, so she ignores the pain of her children.

I've met hundreds of survivors through support groups. I haven't met anyone in a support group who told and was believed. The survivors still in therapy into their 30's, 40's and 50's are those whose mothers didn't protect them. The mothers didn't believe them or flat out told their children to keep quiet about the abuse to avoid family embarrassment. The anger that survivors have for their mothers, for failing to protect them, is just as great as the anger they have for the perpetrator.

Many times, children born into these families--that often have generations of incest in their history--don't have anyone they feel that they can tell. It's a horrendous cycle.
