if i go into 'dime-novel detective' mode, i would say this is an obvious crime of passion---only some deep-seated emotional turmoil can drive someone to do something this garish, when a simple gunshot would suffice...the perp wanted the victim to suffer, and he wanted him humiliated by doing it in broad daylight
