The split is real and the fundies truly believe what they believe. They'll support third party candidates, like the Constitutional or Reform depending on who they nominate, or stay home whether than vote for someone who they believe has betrayed them. Not all of them mind you but a fair enough chunk to put elections in doubt. They aren't backed into a corner--the party is. The fundies own the Republican party now and if the Repubs turn on them (or are seen to have turned on them), they'll walk.

The social security tidbit is interesting--there's nothing fundie about this issue. This is designed to keep the Mensheviks in the revolution--the big business-non-fundy types, who will only put up with so much social conservative engineering before they balk.
