144. something else about this
I can't ever remember a previous ceremony honoring the liberation of Auschwitz or any other concentration camp. I remember a few times when anniversaries were noted but never anything like this. (And I think I would remember an Auschwitz celebration because 1/27 is my brother's birthday.) It seems odd to me that, suddenly, on the 60th anniversary, there is suddenly so much publicity for it.

Not that I think it shouldn't be observed -- it should. But why not on the 40th anniversary? Or the 50th? Or the 30th? Those are usually big anniversaries. In fact, I've been told that the 40th anniversary of an event is usually one of the largest because, by then, the passions of the event have cooled sufficiently and those who were involved are of an age to have some influence. But the 60th? By then, most of those involved are dead.

Or is that why we have waited that long to remember this event???

I just find it very curious.
