25. I'm proud as well
I was raised in a UCC congregation, and although I've moved away from the church and Christianity altogether, I'm finally old enough to appreciate how lucky I was to have such an upbringing. It was an oasis of tolerance in an otherwise close-minded town. I clearly remember having substitute ministers that were openly gay running our services at times. During the two years of confirmation class (which took place from about age 12-14) our congregation decided we should receive sex education which did emphasize abstinence, but also promoted masturbation and made us aware of various birth control and how to protect against STD's if we did choose to have sex. Confirmation classes also required a survey of religions in which once a week we attended services of other Christian denominations and different faiths (including Judaism and Islam), we even explored Buddhism and Paganism. The kicker though was the 5page "statement of faith" we were required to compose before we "graduated" which forced us to critically examine our personal religious /spiritual beliefs. This may have been a little too advanced for young adolescents, but still a good gesture IMHO.
