Posted by Slit Skirt on Fri Jan-27-06 12:16 AM
I am a veteran. I am 50 years old and have lived in this country for as many years. I love this country. We are not perfect as a nation, but the ideal lives because we as a nation and as individual people keep striving. Striving for our dreams and hopes, for us and for our children.
I also believe that I can make a difference, that one person can make a difference. I have hope that my representatives in Washington DC will listen to me and understand my concerns. I believe that even if I am not from your state, Democratic representatives will have the integrity to stand up for what is right. To stand together united on the basis of principle.
I am writing to ask all Democratic Senators to unite for a filibuster. Our constitution is in danger. We have a threat of a unitary president, (dictatorship), and corporate rule, (fascism). We have the threat of a government with no rules and laws, and no one held accountable for failures. We have a threat that our country could be where dissention is punished, and freedom of speech is denied.
Please filibuster for us who have no voice. Filibuster for my children, for your children, for our country, and for our constitution. Filibuster for our founding fathers that had such foresight to protect us against this very thing we are facing now. Although I cry and fear for our future, I have hope that it will be the Democrats who will set this straight. History will remember that it was the Democrats who stood toe-to-toe against this corruption and threat of fascism and stated, “We will no longer take this anymore. This is unacceptable and this is not what America stands for” WE MUST AS A NATION MAKE THIS STATEMENT.
Please do not worry about the backlash. I guarantee you Democrats (and some Republicans) will have your back. We will remember, we will stand with you, and we will proudly beat back this enemy. The initial reaction and attacks will be bad, but NEVER back down. WE ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THIS CRISIS. So please just fight and stand tall. Others before us have sacrificed so much more for a higher ground.. And when it gets really tough, remember our children, remember your children and shudder what they will encounter if we don’t stop it now. When it gets tough, remember our country, the one you so proudly serve. Remember these words of wisdom: “Ask not what this country can do for you, but what can you do for this country”
It always gets darkest before we can see the light.
May God bless you in this fight

Can still call her district for a few minutes, it's central time.
Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) is speaking publicly against a filibuster of the Alito nomination for Supreme Court. She says there is more important business the Senate needs to get on with. !!!!!
Ted Kennedy said yesterday during Alito Senate debate: "The stakes could not be higher. This is the vote of a generation."
Rainbow Push writes re Alito: "50 years of civil, human and women's rights advances are at stake - from Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965."
If confirmed, Alito at age 55 could serve out his life expectancy on the court -- 28 years -- in other words, the next SEVEN CONSECUTIVE PRESIDENTIAL TERMS.
Vote is in the next few days.
Landrieu is one of a handful of Democratic Senators needed to stop Alito.
PLEASE CALL OR FAX HER OFFICES.
PLEASE -- EVERYONE CONTACT HER. IF YOU KNOW LOUISIANA RESIDENTS, INCLUDING EVACUEES LIVING ELSEWHERE -- SPREAD THIS TO THEM TOO. HELP THE NATION!!!
Senator Mary Landrieu (D) Phone: (202) 224-5824 Fax: (202) 224-9735
You can just say YOU MUST FILIBUSTER. Or, if you want to try to be persuasive, ask to speak to Kevin Avery at (202) 224-5824. He is her DC staff person who is in charge of judiciary issues.

252177, Couldn't we just ask them to abstain from voting at all?
Posted by StoryTeller on Thu Jan-26-06 05:07 PM
For cloture, I mean. As several other posts pointed out, those who want to end debate have to vote for cloture. They need 60 votes. As long as Johnson, Byrd, Nelson, and whoever else don't vote yes, then it doesn't matter if they vote no on cloture or if they abstain. It still won't count toward the 60 needed to end debate.
So asking them simply to abstain from voting on cloture would be a way for them to have it both ways--they don't have to take a stand one way or another. Just ask them to stay out of it. It seems it's the least they could do.
If I've misunderstood, please correct me because otherwise I'm going to call in and ask for at least this. But don't worry...it's not an "abstinence-only" program. :)
|
252270, Hell YES! We can ask them to abstain from a cloture vote!
Posted by in_cog_ni_to on Thu Jan-26-06 05:13 PM
It's all the same difference. If they don't get their 60 votes for cloture, ScAlito doesn't get voted in. :) WORKS FOR ME!

Posted by garthranzz on Thu Jan-26-06 05:42 PM
I sent the following to all the Senators (haven't gotten through to Johnson yet).
Dear Senator :
I am a resident of Louisiana. New Orleans drowned because the principles of an "Imperial presidency" enshrine executive negligence and eschews presidential accountability. Judge Alito is, and has been, a principal supporter of the "imperial presidency" doctrine. Had he been on the Supreme Court in the 70's, Nixon would have been able to resist Congress. As a survivor of Katrina, I ask you to reconsider your position and please, support Senator Kerry's courageous call for a filibuster.
Sincerely,

When I called their offices, woman answered at each place. I appealed to each as a woman, to please talk to their Senator and both replied much the same. "Believe me, we have". They both seemed to want their employers to support the filibuster.

no filibuster.
Does somebody has the list?

252842, Add Chafee and Stevens
Posted by worldgonekrazy on Thu Jan-26-06 05:52 PM
Stevens, especially, is a long shot, but you never know.
Chafee, Lincoln- (R - RI) Class I 141A RUSSELL SENATE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON DC 20510 (202) 224-2921 Web Form: chafee.senate.gov/webform.htm
Stevens, Ted- (R - AK) Class II 522 HART SENATE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON DC 20510 (202) 224-3004 Web Form: stevens.senate.gov/contact.cfm
I also think Clinton's office is worth a call as she will only filibuster if it is politically expedient for her (once a Clinton, always a Clinton).
|
263396, I emailed them. Here's what they got...
Posted by joeunderdog on Sat Jan-28-06 03:59 PM
Dear Senator,
I am writing to urge you to carefully consider the dangers of voting in favor of Samuel Alito's nomination to SCOTUS. The fundamental design of his politics are, in essence, anti-democratic and serve to quiet the voices who do not sit in the President's chair. This flies in the face of the Constitutional foundation of our country and is contrary to the very definition of Democracy. As stated in Webster's Dictionary, Democracy is:
1 a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections
When the definition of Democracy is contrasted with the stated ideology of Samuel Alito, it is easy to see that this candidate does not support the Democratic process. If you support Democracy, you cannot support this Nominee.
I respectfully urge you to join the fillibuster proposed by Senatory Kerry.
Thank you.

253051, Sent this out to 18 senators today.
Posted by OnyxCollie on Thu Jan-26-06 06:06 PM
Dear Senator ______,
It is at this dark time in America's history that I call upon you to fulfill your obligations to your constituents and, ultimately, to the citizens of the United States. It is through the actions of the current administration that the democracy upon which this country has been founded now faces extinction. From the distortion of facts leading to the invasion and occupation of Iraq, which has cost the lives of over 2200 Americans and threatens to bankrupt the country far into the future, to the unilateral judgment and condemnation of "enemy combatants" who are held indefinitely without charges and denied legal counsel, to the "extraordinary rendition" of prisoners to CIA "black sites" in foreign countries, to the proud boast of felonious wiretapping of American citizens, the Bush administration has done more harm to the rights and liberties that our founding fathers lived (and died) for than any terrorist attack could possibly accomplish. With the nomination of Judge Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States, the pieces have been put in place for President Bush to remove the last impediment in his quest for absolute power, the checks and balances provided by the Supreme Court of the United States. I ask you, Senator, to vote to oppose the confirmation of Judge Alito to the Supreme Court. It is your duty to your constituents, to the citizens of the United States, and to the founding fathers whose beliefs and actions you have been elected to uphold and protect. The time for action is now and the consequences are dire. It is my hope you will make the right decision. Thank you.
Sincerely,
I just received a response from Lieberman that his office only accepts letters from his constituents (I'm in Ohio). Fuck him anyway. Traitor. Also, just heard it announced on NPR that Frist is calling for the vote to be held Monday or Tuesday.

253134, AP reporting Reid not on board! WTF?
Posted by warbly on Thu Jan-26-06 06:12 PM
"Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid offered no support for Sens. John Kerry, Edward M. Kennedy and other members of the rank-and-file who are threatening a filibuster in an attempt to keep Alito off the high court.
"There's been adequate time for people to debate," Reid said." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060126/ap_on_go_co/alito --- not sure if that quote was really today. could this just be more of the inevitable Alito spin.
i hope the info on Reid being onboard is correct. If not we need a new minority leader pronto. i like Sen Reid, but if he won't get behind the filibuster of this radical, that changes.

Posted by Sick_of_Rethuggery on Thu Jan-26-06 06:12 PM
Here is my letter to them all:
=================================================================================================== Please, Senator xxx, oppose Alito: he is staunchly for this unitary executive thing (he was the brains behind this presidential "signing statement" business, whereby the president chooses to obey the law or not or in part!) -- this is not what we need for the country right now, what with torture and domestic spying that the president is brazenly, openly embracing. Alito also defers too much to executive authority. He is not what we can tolerate at this time and place in our nation's history.
Please support Senators Kerry and Kennedy in their effort to stop this nomination. If a small cabal of the right wing can torpedo Harriet Myers, then 50+% of the nation that is opposed to Bush and his modus operandi should be able to keep one extremely deferential man off the Supreme Court that requires independent thinking justices.
Thank you,
===================================================================================================
Horrible writing, but hopefully it makes the point :-(

OK, Mr. Byrd, you have done your long speech about conservative judges and the miraculous effect of being named to the Supreme Court. You've pleased your anti-abortion constituents, now support your Representative Republic.

Goes to central operator. Ask to leave message for whichever Senator you wish, they put you through.
So far of the list above Senators Byrd and Landrieu mailboxes full and no one's answering at this point. Salazar's phone has been ringing for a while - no answer... Will try Johnson, Collins and Snowe next...
Good work everyone. The toll free #'s may work better in the morning when people will answer instead of voice mail.
This morning as I made calls I asked the staffers if they were receiving many calls as I'd heard the Senators say they weren't hearing from people. They both said the phones have been ringing off the hook - one said he thinks he's talked to every person in the country! LOL!! I asked if it was mostly for or opposed and he said it was tons of both!! Which means we have to stay on this big time!! Start 8 a.m. tomorrow morning with the 888 #'s. Costs nothing and may save us all!

253299, My response to Senator Landrieu...
Posted by dchill on Thu Jan-26-06 06:25 PM
I have seen no reason for anyone who has sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution to vote yes on Mr. Alito, but have every reason to fear his support for expanded executive power. I would think that you would also disagree with his previously documented opinions on Roe v. Wade, an issue that is really more about privacy than abortion.
In urge and encourage you to stand up for what is right for our country; support the filibuster of this nomination.

Dear Senator Byrd:
Please consider a filibuster on the nomination of Alito as a Supreme Court Justice. I have always looked to you for the sane, respected, measured, and careful thinking that has been your trademark for so many years. You have always been the Senator with the long view, with a knowledge of history and a wealth of experience.
Our country has been hijacked by neocon Republicans who take us further each day from the ideals of a democratic republic. I am appalled, ashamed, and frightened of the directions in which our country has been moving. My own parents, 92 and 82 years old respectively, (and lifelong Republicans until the days of Watergate caused them to question our government and the past decade soured their view of the mainstream press) shake their heads in awe at what they read and hear of the shenanigans of the Republicans in the White House and the Congress.
Join with other Democrats and show some spine! Stand up and indicate that the weasily, self-serving and vacuous responses given by Judge Alito in no way indicated his beliefs. American women are indeed frightened of the direction the Supreme Court will take us in terms of reproductive rights, because we find ourselves aghast that this issue is even part of the national conversation. Republicans use it to promote divisiveness in the American people, to create smoke and mirrors to cover the real issues -- the war, health care, retirement and pensions, poverty, education. We have always counted on you to speak out, to call it as you see it.
Please, move for a filibuster of Judge Alito’s nomination. It’s time for the voices of Americans to be heard above the Republican buzz.
Thank you.

260104, I emailed the senators on the list...
Posted by KansDem on Fri Jan-27-06 05:38 PM
Short and sweet.
Dear Senator XXXXX
I am not a constituent, but a concerned American with this to say: Filibuster Alito!
I don’t want to dwell on the possibilities of a Justice Samuel Alito tipping the Supreme Court to the extreme right and helping to establish an Imperial Presidency that places corporate interests over American citizens and erodes the checks and balances put in place by our finding fathers, but I do want to say that, based on the confirmation process, Judge Alito cannot be trusted to make the right decision.
For example, Judge Alito’s evasive answer concerning his past membership in a controversial organization and his refusal to recuse himself in the Vanguard case (after saying he would) tantamount to lies.
In essence, he lied during his “job interview.” Why hire him?
Thank you for your attention to this email.
Sincerely, XXXXX XXXXX
I thought this simple approach would help balance the flood of emails I'm sure they're getting!

Posted by Justice Is Comin on Fri Jan-27-06 10:47 PM
More important things for the Senate to do she says ? What the hell is wrong with her. I put it like this.
Senator Landrieu,
I'm not from Lousiana but I gave to show support of Louisiana's tragedy as it is part of the United States. So am I.
You have a lot of nerve not joining in the filibuster. This is of one of the most abhorrent judges guaranteed to threaten the constitution and insure the continuation of the policies and secrecy of the most dangerous and power crazy president in U.S. history.
Did you listen to the confirmation hearing ? What about Bill Clinton who jumped in to generate millions for your constituents because he thought it was critical that he do so? Now you don't think it's important enough to jump in and save our constitution?
If you refuse to honor the Democrats hard fought victories and values, and those who elected you Senator, you disgust me. You dishonor everything that Bill Clinton has done for you. And tried to put in place.
I contributed to the Katrina disaster losses as a citizen because I thought it was my duty. It is your duty to contribute something to the United States now for generations to come ? Or know that you will live with the consequences of AMERICA'S disaster you helped put on the Supreme Court.
FILIBUSTER ALITO !!!!

I also called the Boston office of my Sen., Kerry, and thanked him for doing this. I went to a kick-off re-election event for Sen. Kennedy today and got sig papers to take around for his nomination. (I know it's Mass, but I live in a purple area of Mass and it's not that easy here to just walk around and ask for sigs. We have RW radio here too! Some areas are real 'door-slammers.')
Teddy K. wasn't there, so I asked his campaign manager to relay to him how much his call for a filibuster on Alito menat to me and to a whole bunch of folks I hang out with at DU. Matt Kennedy, his very young campaign manager, thanked me and said he would give the Senator the message and to keep fighting for this. That was really wonderful!

Posted by selmo7 on Mon Jan-30-06 09:52 AM
I sent about twenty letters yesterday and today to the Senators listed here by Kerry, but also those listed by Kennedy in another post. (I also phoned a number of others last week.) These are the baseline letters I sent:
Dear Senator I am writing today to not only URGE you but to respectfully DEMAND of you to vote NO on closure and support your fellow Democratic Senators in the FILIBUSTER of Judge Samuel Alito.
You KNOW the issues that are at stake for our nation. They have been fully exposed. Not only is the fundamental DIGNITY of American women at stake in the likely future of Roe v. Wade being severely undermined – translate – women’s minds are worthless and they belong “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen – just like in the fifties,” which I find EXTREMELY INSULTING, but this Judge supports the “unitary executive” idea which to me is a lot of doublespeak for institutionalizing a DICTATORSHIP and eradicating our present Constitutionally-based system of checks and balances. Not to mention that the Constitution for the PEOPLE will be completely TRAMPLED and SPIT on in favor of corporate interests. Our country, as I have always known it, is becoming less and less each day and will NO LONGER BE if this Judge is confirmed. You MUST know this to be true.
It is not in my nature to be so forthrightly bold but I am ANGRY as all hell that the Democrats have not pulled together on THIS VERY ISSUE which is SO DAMN FUNDAMENTAL to your Democratic base and moreover ALL US citizens, including the many who voted for Bush simply because they are uneducated and ignorant and brainwashed by the TV and their evangelists, do not really KNOW what they do. If you do not FULLY and 100% support the filibuster, I will remember and I will NEVER support you again. It is just that darn critical and I hope to God that you Democrats that are holding back on this WAKE up and SMELL THE STINK that is in the air and do something REAL about it.
PLEASE PLEASE I SO EXHORT YOU to search your heart so that you might not fall prey to kowtowing to any fears you might have related to political strategizing. This is WAY BIGGER THAN POLITICS. It is surely NOT the time for political chess game playing, It is rather THE VERY TIME to take a FIRM stand – strong as a mighty oak - with an UNWAVERING NO NO NO to closure and a RESOUNDING YES YES YES to your fellow BRAVE Democrats who are leading and supporting the Alito filibuster. I feel you are a courageous man/woman and I pray for you today most heartfully that the Great Creator might drum up a strong HEART OF COURAGE for you for tomorrow’s most pivotal, critical Senate vote. Vote NO on closure. BE A REAL DEMOCRAT! SUPPORT the Alito filibuster!
Thank You Sincerely,
My Name Massachusetts Democrat and PROUD United States Citizen

270366, I just called Johnson, my senator;
Posted by liberalhistorian on Mon Jan-30-06 03:05 PM
the staffer took my name and address and said she'd "pass it on." The spouse of one of my co-workers is a legislative assistant for Johnson and she said his office has been getting over a hundred calls a day, about half and half. I think he's afraid to go on board with it, because he's the subject of some really misleading and nasty ads in the state from wacko fundie groups. Flood him with as MANY calls as you can!
Don't even bother with that idiot Thune, though.
