Former Va. governor urges DNC chairman's firing
Democratic former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder is urging President Barack Obama to fire Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine, another former Virginia governor. Wilder wrote of Kaine, in a column for the Politico news Web site, that "the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee is the wrong job for him." In an interview with The Associated Press, Wilder cited Republican victories in last month's Senate election in Massachusetts and in gubernatorial races last fall in New Jersey and Virginia. "I'm just disappointed in his leadership," Wilder told the AP. "And there are a lot of people _ a lot of Democrats _ who come to me and are disappointed but are not going to speak out like I'm saying it."

Wash. Senate starts clearing way for tax hikes
4 hours ago · The Washington state Legislature's Democratic majority started clearing the way for tax increases Tuesday with its first major vote to brush aside Tim Eyman's tax-limiting Initiative 960.... Approved by voters in 2007, I-960 required that any tax increases win approval from two-thirds of the Legislature - a very difficult hurdle to clear. The 26-23 vote Tuesday endorsed suspension of that rule until July 2011, when the next two-year budget cycle begins.

5 hours ago · ALBANY — The New York State Senate on Tuesday night expelled a senator convicted of assaulting his companion, the first time a member of the Legislature was forced from office in nearly a century. Feb 10 · There is a world of difference between you and us. We argue amongst ourselves over the best way to ensure a good life for the many. You debate us in the hope of ensuring that the good life only belongs to the chosen few. You call them what you perceive them to be: lazy, good-for-nothing, irresponsible Welfare Queens, in need of being wrenched off the communal teat. We recognize them for what they are: the homeless, the poverty-stricken, the down-on-their-luck, in need of assistance to

Feb 09 · This is an interesting article from one of my favorites, Kathryn Joyce, at the Daily Beast. She discusses how Bill Clinton is working to free the Baptists in Haiti. Then she points out the new tactics. "As Clinton works to spring the U.S. missionaries charged with kidnapping, the case highlights a new evangelical strategy: Adopt Third World babies and convert them." For the past week, the news from Haiti has been dominated by the story of 10 American evangelicals from Idaho who were

Feb 08 · Globalization Is Killing the Globe: Return to Local Economies by Thom Hartmann Globalization is killing Europe, just as it's already wiped out much of the American middle class. Spain and Greece are facing immediate crises that many other European nations see on the near horizon: aging boomer workers are retiring with healthy benefit packages, but the younger workers who are paying for those benefits aren't making anything close to the income (or, therefore, paying the taxes) that their

Feb 03 · Glad a newspaper is noticing that the Los Angeles area is in the forefront in the movement to give over the schools there to outside bidders, to have them no longer run by the school district. The editorial makes a very important point as well about technical high schools once privatized required all to take college bound courses. Change is not necessarily reform. Genuine reform produces lasting, beneficial improvements and isn't concocted by editors or frustrated school boards wil

Feb 08 · A recent article in The Nation by Lawrence Lessig, titled “How to Get our Democracy Back – There Will Be No Change Until we Change Congress”, puts the blame for our current state of affairs squarely on the U.S. Congress. Actually, it’s not Congress per se that is the problem, but our system for electing our Congresspersons – which of course has brought us our current Congress. Of course, our broken system is also used to elect our President and myriad lesser public officials. Lessig begin

Feb 08 · Stonewall Shelby and the Party of "NO"[/FONT By Bennet Kelley As Washington is paralyzed by the "snowpocalypse," images of the city's majestic monuments in a sea of white snow bring back fond memories of my years there. Eventually Mother Nature or the D.C. government will clear away the snow, but even then Washington will remain paralyzed by something far less endearing than even yellow snow -- Republican nihilism. Last week, Senator Shelby (R-AL) used a parliamentary tactic known as a
