4. There really isn't any point in using language like 'universal', that just ends up with derailment..

arguing about details and minutia.

Members of minority groups talking among themselves... that kind of usage isn't so problematic.

'Jokes' where the term is used in a pejorative way... that's a little more problematic.

This is a subject which requires us to use our minds and hearts to discern not just intent, but also the wider context.

The general rule I stated above works pretty well, I think. Imagine the same statement with another slur, and see how it feels. Not everyone will agree, but that's how society has always worked. The acceptability of these terms changes slowly over time. People will object or not, and discussions will be had, and minds will change or they won't.

Some apparently think that one day we'll be able to use every slur freely and it won't matter because the words will hold no power. I don't see it playing out the same way. It doesn't seem to have happened that way so far anyway, and I don't see any reason to think the trend would suddenly change now.
