(24,406 posts)The GOP base being demoralized can't be anything but a good thing of course but most will, in all likelihood, still vote for Romney because they hate President Obama so much. Where this might backfire for us and why I think Carter's statement is still problematic is that both President Obama and Romney have to capture the "middle" or "swing voters" and the strategy has to be to paint Romney as a right-wing radical or at least likely to sign off on radical right-wing legislation once in office (which he will IMHO). Somebody like Jimmy Carter saying that he would feel "comfortable" with Romney as POTUS could send the signal to swing voters that it's probably safe for them to vote for Romney, which they may end up doing, especially if they think that there is a possibility that Romney could potentially manage the economy better (he can't, of course, but there is already a significant public perception that he can for some reason). OTOH most people might not really listen to Jimmy Carter and Romney is not likely to tout his "endorsement" either, so............
