In reply to the discussion: UPDATED: McCain: "a lot of ill will towards senator Hagel...he attacked president Bush mercilessly" [View all]TwilightGardener
(46,416 posts)We all saw it. Over and over, it was all about support of Israel--even Lorne Michaels had to mock it. When Hagel's name was first floated in December, a Republican aide said "Send us Hagel and we'll make sure everyone knows he's an anti-semite." That's been almost the ENTIRE basis of attacks on him. Iran is secondary, but since they're not really going to attack us, one might assume that also relates to Israel. If Hagel goes down, it will most likely be a statement related to Israel. They are searching for it, desperately. In the same way I don't think the Tea Party represents all of the US, I also don't think these neocon/pro-Israel interests represent all of Israel or people of Jewish faith in America. But to ignore the obvious weapon used to bludgeon this man (his insufficient faithfulness to Israel) is total cognitive dissonance.
