About 4 years ago, I asked Howard if there was any way the Senate Democrats would want him replaced, and he laid out to me pretty much what you said. They want as majority leader someone who know the ins and outs and how to get things done, and the majority leader's effectiveness doesn't always depend on his or her individual politics.

i don't understand his motivation samsingh Jan 2013 #1
One huge motive--Dems could lose Senate in 2014 with those vulnerable seats. hooverville29 Jan 2013 #3
With the filibuster fiasco as it is, the Dems. and Obama will continue to have their hands tied. Cal33 Jan 2013 #4
It is far more likely that he did it to hamper Liberal Dems NorthCarolina Jan 2013 #5

This is the impression his facial expression makes on me: It looks harmless enough, also spineless. Cal33 Jan 2013 #6
Please, be real. Don't waste your time with nonsensical notions. RBInMaine Jan 2013 #7
You haven't explained why you think this is a nonsensical notion. Cal33 Jan 2013 #8
If it had passed, what would have happened once the republicans are in charge again? WhoWoodaKnew Jan 2013 #9
What you seem to be saying is that you'd prefer to have a ghost of a Democratic government Cal33 Jan 2013 #10
Actually, I was asking the question of how this will play out whenthe repub's are back in power (and WhoWoodaKnew Feb 2013 #21
If you don't have some genuine Democrat who wants his job, what then? I don't think there is one. ancianita Feb 2013 #12
I don't want to waste time on infighting. Some changes were made to the better, not enough at least Sunlei Feb 2013 #13

How do you propose he can be thrown out now? Elections are over. LiberalFighter Feb 2013 #23
Can't he be replaced as senate majority leader, if enough Democratic senators are for it? I know Cal33 Feb 2013 #24
How do you propose that enough Democratic Senators will do that? LiberalFighter Feb 2013 #28
I think there are enough people dissatisfied with Reid's frequent cave-ins. They could be Cal33 Feb 2013 #29
That won't happen unless one of the 3 reasons I mentioned. LiberalFighter Feb 2013 #32
I support Reid's decision. Buzz Clik Feb 2013 #26
Yeah! Keep him and let's enjoy another 400+ Republican filibusters for the coming 4 years! Cal33 Feb 2013 #30
Good point. We will always have the majority in the Senate, so get rid of the filibuster. Buzz Clik Feb 2013 #31
Let's get Reid replaced by a Progressive first, and then work to get rid of the filibuster. Cal33 Feb 2013 #33
We can replace Reid with a full blown socialist, but let's keep the filibuster. Buzz Clik Feb 2013 #34
You're right. But let's keep the filibuster the way it started out -- a talking filibuster. Cal33 Feb 2013 #35
on google looks like 99% of the reid hate campaign comes from republican media websites. Sunlei Feb 2013 #36
