Patrick should appoint the Democratic candidate in the special election, so that his appointee can build up statewide name recognition. Scott Brown already has that from two statewide campaigns and more than a year's service in the Senate.

If it seems clear that Markey will be the nominee, he should be appointed. If there's likely to be a seriously contested primary, of course, then Patrick's task is more difficult.
