(8,445 posts)Unless you get rid of the RW lock on broadcast spectrum, people will keep listening to Neocon radio while they are stuck in traffic, and poor whites will only have access to TV that is overwhelmingly corporate and Right-leaning.
You have to break up the regional monopolies, and get rid of the products of 90's merger-mania so that most media assets are owned by far more than 5 corporations (50 would be more reasonable). Reinstate ownership restrictions on broadcast media so that they cannot become mouthpieces for other sectors; for finance or the military-industrial complex as they are now.
Coming at it from the other direction, it would make a great deal of sense to start state and regional public broadcasting networks (not just individual stations) with a focus on real news reporting-- the operators at the national level are very corrupt so alternatives are needed. (Likewise, I advise against investment in for-profit media corporations as a way to level the playing field-- It doesn't work for long and the for-profit model will cause them to turn RW.)
This is how you reduce the blaring 10-zillion-watt, 24/7 crazy-making machine.
