Social security and the way in which the government reduces the deficit ( taxes ) is very important to actual people's lives. anyone who thinks democracy is voting for a candidate and then just blindly trusting that he will do what you want is probably a " every-4th -year " voter. Elected officials want you to contact them and tell them what you want. If you are here to hear your own point of view repeated to you, then what is the point?
If you listen to the news on Social Security and letting the Bush cuts expire, I think the words are all chosen very carefully. They say the issue is " too complex " to get done now. That means that the GOP isn't really willing to compromise.
The GOP says that "revenue" is on the table. We hear that and think " taxes on the rich ". I think what they mean is putting limits on middle class "loophole" deductions like mortgage interest and child dependents.
We got stomped in the 2010 elections. Did we abandon our beliefs?
Why does everybody think that the GOP has changed its positions?
I'd also like to know why so many Dems are ready to accept reductions in SS and medicare.
If I say that reductions in womens rights, gay rights or minority rights should be "on the table" in exchange for Tax equity and the strengthening of entitlement programs, I would ( and probably will ) catch holy hell. I do not suggest anything of the sort. But if the media say that raising the eligibility age for SS is reasonable, its " necessary compromise ".
I pay into SS for the benefit of our elders, here and now. SS is not an investment in my future; it is an investment in our society . Do some research on the plight of the elderly before Social security.
I'd rather nothing gets done the rest of the year than see any right wing goals achieved .
Social security is my sacred cow. The President is not.
If the tax increases are "too complex to deal with" before the end of the year, doesn't that imply their extension?
Don't take my word for it; look for yourself.
yes, I am a democrat.Yes I voted straight Democrat in the election (NO EXCEPTIONS). No, I do not believe that the GOP has turned over a new leaf. They still want to destroy entitlements and protect the Wealthy. The only thing they will change is their PR image. Yes, I believe that Big Money is still trying to influence policy. No, i do not believe that the Dems are immune to Big Money influence. Yes, I will give our Democrats in office credit when they actually achieve something. No, i do not expect our politicians to know what we want without us telling them. Yes, I believe that sites like DU are used as a gauge of Democrat opinion.
