16. It's tough.
I live in east Texas but I grew up in Houston. I live here because I inherited a house that had been in my mom's family for several generations. I was tired of the crazy drivers and general hyperactive vibe in Houston.
People ask me what Church I go to. I tell them I am a unitarian. They glaze over because they don't know what that is.
I think if I get asked again I will say I go to "Our Lady of None of Your Goddamn Business!"
We are 80 miles from the nearest Unitarian fellowship and 150 miles from civilization (Houston or Dallas).
One fundy told me I was going to hell if I "meditated and worshiped Buddha".
I corrected him. i said "First of all you don't know who's going to hell and I don't either. Secondly, Buddha is NOT a god. He is an enlightened man. He is revered but not worshiped."
This guy's response: "Ohhhhhhhhhh....."
These people only know what their half assed preacher tells them, which is that all other religions are WRONG.
The woman next door came over and I showed her my altar with my Medicine Buddha and Kwan Yin statues. I asked her what she thought. She crossed her forearms for protection and said "Buddhism is VOODOO!" I explained to her that Buddhism was an ancient and dignified religion. but she did not hear me.
She also insulted me in my own house. I opened my upright piano and ripped through a bit of a Chopin waltz from memory. I started playing Chopin waltzes when I was ten years old.
She said "Showoff!!" So that means she hates educated people with skills, that have applied themselves to learn something over many years!!
We put up a six foot tall board fence on our property so we wouldn't have to look at her house. We also put a bagua on a tree facing her house.
