5. Nuns tend to be cloistered and are often the "Second Order" of religious orders

Sisters tend to have an active apostolate and are either in congregations or Third Orders.

It is in the former that you are more likely to see this metaphor.

BTW, the church itself is often referred to as the Bride of Christ.

I find these types of mateaphors to be, in the main, cloying.
